Hiking Up Volcán Concepción

~«◊»~

Volcán Concepción, Nicaragua: April 6, 2016

Following the departure of my motorbike buddy, Mike, I relaxed with two locals working side-by-side with their own competing bike rental business. We chose to rent our motorbikes from Roberto for 24 hours to ride around the island of Ometepe. As I sat in-front of his competitor Elmer’s shop, two female Québécois reserved a hike to the top of Concepción with Elmer as their guide. Hearing about this opportunity for the first time, I paid $23 to join the trip while Roberto was not around. From Roberto’s aggressive kindness and the option to spend the day with some beautiful people, I went up with Elmer’s group.

That night I dreamt I nearly missed the 5AM bus with the group and my premonition essentially came true. Without an alarm, I barely prepared myself in time to reach the bus which took us to the base of the volcano national park. I’m so grateful to have made it for this special opportunity.

One step at a time, we managed to reach the summit within five hours. Since we left so early in the morning, the forest was comfortably cool and the second-half of the trail was veiled in a cloudy mist. When the clouds dispersed on our way back down, we paused to take in the spectacular view. Witnessing the entire west side of the island, Lake Nicaragua and the mainland was the most beautiful sight I have yet to see.

je suis un beau papillon.
